Camellias ~ The Queen of Ornamentals!
Camellias are evergreen shrubs or trees that are native to China, Japan and Southeast Asia. Over the past few hundred years however, they have made their way into our gardens and hearts here in the USA. Their characteristics are so diverse that no other ornamental can compete. They typically bloom fall through spring in climate zones 7, 8 and 9. But with recent advancements in breeding Cold Hardy Camellias, we can now extend that boundary to even more cooler climates. They can live for hundreds of years and they have a wide variety of growth habits, leaf sizes, textures and patterns, color ranges and color patterns such as stripes, blotches and specks, as well as hybrids with fragrance! And most importantly Camellias do not have thorns!
With new advances in breeding, we will soon see camellias that can bloom all year long – not just in fall -spring. Today there are varieties that do bloom in the summer, although not available on the mainstream market yet, it will not be long! It is no wonder why they are referred to as The Queen Of Ornamentals!
